Tome City has opened!

Whilst not all services are ready yet, the main areas have been swept clean, ready for traffic. Already several stories have been posted! Check them out now!

Post away! Tome City is here for you, so please post, suggest features you'd like to see, hang out in the chatroom or play the arcade games.

Further news will be posted in this thread as and when!

Mmm, it seems that this isn't working properly. Whilst I can see the sticky option, testing has shown me that others can't see it. I'm fairly sure I've set the permissions right, so could be a bug or something. I'll work on this some more.

In the meantime, if you have a long story/thread you'd like the first post/other post, to show at the top of every page, put a link to it below and I'll do the thing that needs to be done.

I'll go through a few of the recent/more updated stories and do this.

In an effort to get my notifications working I've taken all of my 'followed' posts, threads and chapters off my profile. Wondering if/when these mods will be added to Tome. Once I know they're back I'll re-follow; just wanted to make sure the mods were there so I can see if they're working or not. Thanks.

Yes, the Follow mods have been reloaded and, after testing, seem to be working as they should once more. The only thing missing is the 'new chapters' column on the left, but that's because the portal mod hasn't been re-added yet. (which includes the shoutbox).

As TB pointed out, the mod has a bug. If the first post is made sticky, it 'overwrites' the second post. This may not be a problem on threads such as this one, but if the second post is chapter one of a story, then obviously it's not the best thing. (The second post isn't lost, it's just hidden. If the first post is unstickied the second post is revealed again).

I'll go through and un-sticky any that I stickied before that should need it and get this mod uninstalled and the old one put back.

I've added a couple of new little features to Tome today.

The first is a new row of little icons at the top of the post box. Actually these don't really do anything new (much), but the buttons are a bit nicer to use. I'm working on a way to remove the 'old' duplicate buttons.

You may also notice some medals in the profile field on the left of posts. These are automatic post medals.

I'm not sure about the design of them yet, I did try a few different ones created by me, but I didn't really like them. If anyone wishes to try submitting alternatives, please let me know! Anyway, the post medals are awarded at 100,500,1000,5000,10000,15000,20000,30000,40000,50000,60000,70000,80000,90000,100000 posts.

Okay, the upper reaches there aren't really realistic, but I had to keep the number of medals the same, and too low counts ended up splattering medals everywhere.

Okay, I finally discovered an alternative Smiley sets mod!!!!

As this and the first mod mentioned above conflicted, I removed that one.

Now I have to trawl through the smileys and add them to different categories. So this could take some time. Please bear with me!

EDIT: Okay, should be just about done. I'm not sure how many is okay, bearing in mind some people may have screens with lower resolutions, so let me know if the tabs are too long or something.

Hm, any way to thumbnail the larger ones? Cards is a bit awkward.

Not sure about the cards. I'll maybe resize them all a bit, but I don't think you can thumbnail them.

At great expense, I've rebought the better gallery, so we're back to improved functionality on there. (I couldn't use the one from before as it wasn't compatible with the new SMF. So it goes).

If you would like to have your own gallery, as some have, then you need to PM me and purchase it with your Groats. I forget the price exactly, but it's in the market area someplace.

The Tomians who had galleries before still have them of course.

Well the firewall (last post) didn't seem to dent the spam users in the slightest,

so I've installed another kind of captcha puzzle thing for registration. We'll see if this one works.

There was one registered last week whose posts I exercised my Overseer-ness on. Was gonna mention it, but totally forgot until now. Also tried out the profile warning system, but I wasn't sure how much of a warning percent I should assign so I just went with the full 20%. Dunno what that does, though.

Ditto there. Some guy signed up with a dodgy-looking username so I checked him out. Didn't actually post anything, but made a comment in his profile linking to a place to buy viagra.

Thanks fellows. Tome's had a setup for a while now that means new registers can't put links in their sigs and other places, but the comments section of the profile is the one place I've not been able to stop this happening. If I see a new user with a link in there they get terminated. Lots of others don't put comments there, but I'm fairly sure they're also Spammies.

Anyway, whilst it's not been very long since I installed the new captcha puzzle, there haven't been any new registrations of these, so maybe it's working.

The Chapters mod is currently being upgraded and fixed. Because of this all the Chapter features are currently unavailable. These should be re-added soon, along with the New Chapters column on the left.

There may be some small instability on Tome whilst Testobot fixes things.

As you can see, the chapters feature is back. There are still a few issue with it, and the left column shows Most Followed at the moment, rather than the latest.

Testobot has been whipped and its oil ration withheld, and these things should be fixed shortly.

I rather like the 'most followed' idea, though perhaps you could put it at the bottom or somewhere, as it's a bit squashed on the left side there. Or maybe make the column width wider? Is that doable?

After a bit of a hiccup, I'm pleased to announce that we have our Chapters feature back to full strength!

To recap:

If you write a new chapter of your story, click the 'Chapter post' tickbox under the post box (you can edit the post to do this too if you forget when you first post the chapter). The post will then be classed as a 'Chapter', and will show up in the left hand side 'New Chapters' area, making it more visible.

A new Chapter will also automatically notify anyone Following (see below) your story that a new episode is up.

If you like a story, click on the 'Follow' option at the top of the thread, and you shall be notified as mentioned above.

You can also see the 'Most Followed' stories on the left, lower down, and in the option on the top menu.

There are two things I should note though:

Due to technical limitations I've had to widen the column on the left slightly. Hopefully this won't make the centre area (the main area) too narrow. It's fine on my monitor, but I have a high resolution. Please let me know if it's too thin on yours!

The other 'bug' is that stories with their own forum and have chapters that are posted as new threads, will not notify the Followers, as this currently only works if a chapter is added to the same thread as is being Followed. I've requested a slight update from Testobot that will hopefully solve this issue, but it's not ready yet.

TBH, i think the narrower screen is better, makes close text easier to follow. Tis also good for those of us who are hungover and desperately trying to read posts

I decided that the bottom section (Tome City Services) was taking up space and generally looking untidy, so I've deleted it and moved the Services into the top category as a board, as well as done a bit of adjusting to things within.

The Tome City Services section is for advertising your, er, services and needs. If anyone has any suggestions or feedback about it, please let me know. It's not really a heavily used area.

Also just a reminder that eBooks can now be sold/given away on www.TomeJournals.com If you would like to sell or make your complete work available on TJ, please let me know!

Also, I've added a Chairs 'smiley' group so you can now 'pull up a chair' whilst waiting for that next chapter. If you would like me to add a chair for you, please upload it to the gallery and send me a PM. It should have a plain white background and be 50 pixels wide. Later I may make the backgrounds transparent, if I feel like making the effort. Smileys are quite hard work!

Oh yes, forgot to mention that. It's actually been active for ages, but I thought I'd try displaying on the post profile and see if it was okay. It measures activity (posts) over the last thirty days. (100% = 100 posts).

I've finally found a good awards system! Our new purchase means that we have automatic badge (awards) for a variety of things. It also supports manual awards too, so I'll work on that later.

The system displays up to six awards in your post profile, and you can see the others by going to your full profile and clicking on the 'badges' option. I'll try to get them to display in the profile itself, but not sure if I'll be able to do that.

I'll be updating the graphics on some of them as well as and when.

Anyway, feedback, as always, welcome.

EDIT: I'm also adding two badges that will awarded for finishing a complete story or Interactive story on Tome, as long as it's at least five chapters and 20k words. This award is manual, so you may have to remind me about it!

I think there's a donate button in your profile, under the 'actions' menu. Otherwise you can just Paypal Sales@Tomecity.com, though if you do that make sure you add a message saying who you are!
